Today’s drink: The Best Damn Margarita
Let me just say now, I am a fan of any drink with Tequila, but especially a margarita. When my husband and I finally took our honeymoon cruise to Alaska (after 10 yrs of marriage), I found a whole new appreciation for a good marg. I repeatedly paid the exorbitant price for the drink not only because it was the best damn margarita I’ve ever had, but because watching the bartender make it was pure art. He muddled fresh limes in the bottom of the glass, used top shelf tequila and shook with abandon. Since the moment I stepped off the ship, I’ve been trying to recreate the flavor and freshness. I think I finally nailed it and I’m going to share it with you.

All the classic Margaritas I’ve had follow the 3-2-1 rule. 3 parts tequila, 2 parts orange liqueur, 1 part sour. This one is different, because one: I like my margarita in a big girl glass and that would be a lot of alcohol, two: I still need to be able to function (you know make dinner, and generally take care of the family), and three: I love the tang of good sour. The ratio is not as important as how great it tastes. The great taste comes from the quality of the tequila and using FRESH, HOMEMADE sour mix! And of course, those muddled limes.
I follow a 3-2-2 ratio….and then may or may not splash in more tequila or more sour depending on my mood. I’m not a bartender (but they have all my respect) so please don’t be offended by laissez-faire approach to alcohol. If you’re still with me, it’s 3 parts tequila (that must be 100% agave), 2 parts orange liqueur and 2 parts sour mix (see bonus recipe below). Print it, share it, but most importantly and absolutely, DRINK it!
The Best Damn Margarita
- 3 oz Tequila 100% Agave
- 2 oz Triple Sec (go cheap, spend the money on the tequila)
- 2 oz Sour Mix
- 1 Fresh Lime, cut in wedges
- 1 Mason Jar, for shaking
Muddle two lime wedges in the bottom of a sturdy pint glass, fill with ice and set aside.
Add ice to mason jar along with tequila, triple sec and sour mix. Shake well and then strain out into pint glass.
Garnish with lime wedge, drink and REPEAT!
